Ringing ears or ringing in the ears, which tinnitus is often referred to as, can be caused by over active nerves. Studies have recently shown that nerves in your face or neck may cause the ringing ears you experience. Even for those of you that don’t suffer from tinnitus, you may experience the ringing ears after a concert because of how the loudness affects the nerves previously mentioned. Neurons throughout your body are in over drive and firing off sounds you’re not used to hearing from within.

Tinnitus suffers experience ringing ears without any outside influence. Ringing ears affects about one in ten people, with cases ranging from mild to severe. The ringing ears conditions may worsen as you get older (something you can’t avoid) or by things such as whiplash, dental work or head or neck trauma. Things such as dental work cause tinnitus like systems (ringing ears) because of the sounds produced by the brain.

The ringing ears you personally experience may be different from another sufferer. Some people hear faint sounds while others hear more high pitched tones. Some hear tones that can be compared to crashing waves or chirping. It can be constant or intermittent, depending on the severity of your case. While you are experiencing these ringing ears, it may feel like you can hear nothing but the ringing. This is because the nerves that are causing the ringing ears are preventing the auditory system from working properly.
